Fingerprint gun safes have experienced a staggering explosion in popularity within the past five years. There are a few factors to take into consideration when looking at why this method of guarding our firearms has become so vastly popular. One factor is the advancements in the biometrics, the technology that drives a fingerprint rifle safe or a fingerprint pistol safe. Only a few short years ago this fingerprint recognition technology was only available to the military and the super rich. Another reason for the take off in popularity is the affordability of these devices.

Fingerprint Gun Safe Facts:

Battery Life Just As Long As A Keypad Gun Safe

Multiple Users Can Be Added and Subtracted From Memory

Multiple Fingers Can Be Used For Advanced Access

New Technology Drastically Cuts Down On False Rejection Rate (FRR)

Quickest Accessibility Possible

It is important to understand a little bit about how the fingerprint gun safe technology works. Maybe this should be a separate blog post in itself but for the sake of conversation, Ill touch on the basics.

The process begins when you get that brand new shiny safe and you turn it on for the first time. Most safes now store an average of 30 fingerprints in their memory. When you set the safe up you will do scans of your fingerprint on your chosen finger to get it into the memory.

After that is complete anytime your fingerprint, which is exclusive to you only, is scanned the safe will pop open and grant you success to your firearm. The scanner actually does this by using a laser that detects and stores the unique patterns and depths within your fingerprint.

One Fingerprint Gun Safe manufacturer recommends scanning the same finger into the safe’s memory multiple times. They say that by having multiple angles of your fingerprint you can drastically cut down of the off chance of the scanner not recognizing the angle of your fingerprint.

Biometric Guns safes have come a very long way since their first introductions into the consumer markets. Maybe you do not need a large fingerprint rife safe but you would like a smaller fingerprint pistol safe? The point is there are much more options out there for protecting your home while keeping your firearms and family safe and sound.

If you own guns you probably already know the importance of having them secured when inside the home. If you are looking to buy a fingerprint gun safe you are already taking one of the first steps needed to properly secure your firearms. The fact is that biometric pistol safes have come a long way since they first came out and you may have heard bad things about the first models. Here is a list of highlights for you to better make your decision.

5) Portability. Most fingerprint gun safes are fairly small. This allows you to take it with you when going to the gun range or traveling. You can have the same access and security for your firearm where ever you go.

4) Controlled Access. With a biometric gun safe you can control who can store their fingerprints in the memory of the safe. This means that you can allow the gun safe to be opened by you, your spouse or anyone else you deem responsible enough to handle the gun. This is great if you are away from the home but want you loved ones to be protected while you’re away.

3) Keys Suck. I don’t need to tell you that keys are a huge pain in the butt. They are never where you left them and you can never find them when you really need them. If you have a gun safe that needs a key to be opened chances are you are going to leave the key right near the safe. This allows anyone who finds the safe a chance to find the key and then get your gun. This could be your kids or even an intruder.

2) Quick Access. With a fingerprint gun safe all you need to do is place your fingers on the scanner and then the safe opens. You do not need to worry about finding a key or remembering a special code. This is crucial in a high stress situation. A biometric gun safe will do away with missing keys and stupid pass codes.

1) Cost. This may have been the major factor that was holding you back from getting a fingerprint gun safe. When the technology first came out it was quite costly. Now that a few years have gone by many of these safes with biometric technology are available for fewer than two hundred dollars. Often times they can cost less than the firearm itself. With the many advantages associated with owning a fingerprint gun safe it is almost a no brainer to pick one up.

Biometric safes are becoming very popular among people looking to be sure their firearms and personal belongings are safe and sound. It is important when making the decision as to which safe is right for you and that you know the basic features. This article will explore some of the common features on fingerprint safes or biometric safes.

A lot of the safes being offered on the market today do feature a fingerprint or biometric reader. This allows you to store known fingerprints and grants access to anyone who has a stored print. These safes have a power requirement but they also feature a battery option. Most of them use a 9 volt battery that usually lasts up to a year.

Some other safes are fireproof. In addition to offering fingerprint access they also have a fire rating. Commonly, a one hour fire protection rating will keep the inside temperature of the safe under 350 degrees. This is very important because that means paper will not burn and some ammunition will not combust. In addition to being fireproof, most safes are water proof as well. Some are even protected when fully submerged in water. This is especially helpful in the event of a fire. More often than not most damage in a fire situation is due to the suppression methods and not the fire itself.

A common concern with a biometric safe is the possibility of the fingerprint scanning system failing. This is overcome with a backup key system. You do not need the key to access the safe every time but in the event of something going wrong with the biometric system the key can be used.

Another useful feature of these gun safes is the anti-pry doors. This allows the safe to close flush with the body so it makes it very difficult for someone to try and pry it open. Many of the safes have foam or felt interiors. This prevents any firearms that are being stored from being scratched or damaged.

A few other optional features can include a spring loaded door so when the correct fingerprint is entered the door pops right open. Some biometric safes even feature an interior light so you can see everything inside with a quick glance. It all depends on which size and model gun safe that you are interested in. Many of them have gone down in price and are a lot more affordable now.

Now that the biometric gun safe or fingerprint gun safe is making it way to mainstream markets the question arises; how reliable are they? This article will explore some of the research that has been done when exploring this question.

There are two main things that can go wrong with these new types of gun safes. The first issue is a false match. This occurs when the biometric mechanism falsely identifies a match when scanning a fingerprint. This would then allow access to the contents of the safe. The second issue is a false non match. This occurs when the right person is attempting to access the biometric scanner and it does not identify the person correctly. The safe will not unlock and access will not be granted.

According to a 2004 study; Performance Evaluation of Fingerprint identification systems 100 subjects were tested for the false match rate and the false non match rate. The study found that 2% of the time one of these situations could occur. One this they noted was that when testing the false non match rate the cleanliness of the subject’s fingers played a small part.

Another major concern to be aware of is that biometric gun safes do require a certain degree of maintenance. Most run off of a 9 volt battery. The batteries usually last for up to a year. The safe will not become useless if the battery dies but a key override system may need to be used.

Another cause for concern is the access options with most fingerprint gun safes. Most models allow the user to store multiple fingerprints that have access. This is usually an advantage but could prove to be a problem in a domestic situation. It is important to keep the stored record up to date so you know who can have access at all times.

The fingerprint gun safe technology, biometric technology as a whole has been advancing very quickly. The failure rates are probably already lower on new models and are only improving as the time goes on. It is soon getting to the point that you have a better chance of failure with a safe that you need to locate the key for then with a biometric gun safe.
